About Peter Santamaria

My name is Peter Santamaria and this is my story.

I am the first of four children born to Domenick and Anna Santamaria. My parents were born in Bensonhurst Brooklyn N.Y. to parents who were Italian Immigrants. Bensonhurst which was a primarily Jewish and Italian neighborhood was a great place to be brought up as a young child. Most people know of Bensonhurst because it is where Saturday Night Fever was filmed along with films such as

  • Dog Day Afternoon (1975) …
  • Saturday Night Fever (1977) …
  • The Warriors (1979) …
  • Do the Right Thing (1989) …
  • Jungle Fever (1991) …
  • Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Bensonhurst has long been well-known as a Little Italy of Brooklyn, containing a large Italian-American and Italian immigrant population. The annual Festa di Santa Rosalia (commonly known as “the Feast” to locals), is held on 18th Avenue from Bay Ridge Parkway (75th Street) to 66th Street in late August or early September. I remember the “feast” vividly. The air surrounding the feast smelled of panelle. these are Sicilian fritters made of ground up chickpea flour, deep fried and slapped on a chewy sesame roll. Let’s not forget the sausage and peppers, Zeppoles, stagghiola (roasted intestines) and the beautiful grilled octopus. The smell of the foods is intoxicating.

My father when he was young joined the Marines during the Korean War and later went on to work for the NYPD. He retired after 25 years of service. My parent’s dream was to move to South Florida which they did in 1974. They settled in beautiful Boca Raton Florida right down the street from the famous Boca Raton Hotel and Club. My father worked for the city of Boca Raton as a code enforcement official where he retired at 86 years old to take care of my mom who got ill. They were married 67 years until my mother got killed in an automobile crash on January 30th, 2017.

I came into this world on October 17th of 1955.  I was born at Maimonides Hospital a non-sectarian hospital located in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

I have seen and experienced many things from The shooting of both John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby to a man landing on the moon. I have watched the Vietnam war conflict to the birth of Woodstock, Johnny Carson, The Beatles right down to Lawrence Welch. I have seen and witnessed the first colored TV, home computer, the first pager and the first cell phone introduced to the public. I watched Google go public in 2006. I watched 9/11 live and the first Gulf War so you see I have witnessed many parts of history good and bad.
